ChatGPT vs. DeepSeek: The Battle of AI Conversational Giants

Transcript

Speaker 1: Welcome back to another deep dive today. Uh, we're looking at AI chatbots, specifically ChatGPT and DeepSeek R01. You've probably heard of ChatGPT, but DeepSeek is kind of the new kid on the block. And get this, it claims to be just as good as Cha GPT, but way cheaper. We found this research paper comparing them head-to-head. So, let's, uh, let's jump in.

Speaker 2: Yeah, the thing about DeepSeek is how they built it. It's made by a company called DeepSeek Labs, and they use something called a mixture of experts model. You can shorten that to MoE. Basically, it uses different parts of its system for different tasks. Kind of that's a, you know, a Swiss army knife. It's got all these different tools for different jobs.

Speaker 1: Oh, I like that. Makes sense. So, it's more efficient, maybe even faster than models. that use their whole system for every request. I'm thinking of ChatGPT here.

Speaker 2: Exactly. And that efficiency really shows in the cost of training DeepSeek. This research says it costs something like six million dollars. That's like a tenth of what it took to train ChatGPT.

Speaker 1: Wow, that's a huge difference. But, uh, does that mean it can't perform as well?

Speaker 2: No, no, no. Actually, the paper says DeepSeek is either just as good or even better than ChatGPT in all sorts of tests. Math, history, literature, even writing code.

Speaker 1: So faster, cheaper to make, and performs just as well if not better than the big names? What's the catch? There's got to be a trade off somewhere, right?

Speaker 2: Well, you're right to be thinking that way. There are differences. DeepSeek is totally open source. Anyone can look at the code and change it if they want. That kind of creates trust with developers. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a closed system. OpenAI keeps that code secret.

Speaker 1: Hmm, that's a big difference. As a user, I think I'd feel better knowing what's going on under the hood, you know.

Speaker 2: Sure. And then there's the cost tease. DeepSeek R01 is totally free. But ChatGPT has a free version that's limited. You gotta pay to get all the features.

Speaker 1: So DeepSeek is really shaking things up, performance cost, open source. But what about data privacy? That's a big one these days.

Speaker 2: Definitely a crucial question. They both collect data to improve themselves, but the big difference is where that data goes. DeepSeek is a Chinese company. Their data is stored in China. ChatGPT is American, so their data is stored in the US. So, depending on where you are, that raises a whole different set of concerns.

Speaker 1: You know, you bring up a good point. Choosing an AI isn't just about what it can do. It's about where your information goes and how it's handled. That's tough.

Speaker 2: It is. Both DeepSeek and ChatGPT have their pluses and minuses. DeepSeek is cheap, transparent, and performs great. But some people might not like where the data is stored. ChatGPT is well known and used by a lot of people, but it's a closed system and you have to pay for it. So, it really depends on what matters most to you.

Speaker 1: Well, this deep dive has definitely been eye opening. We've learned a lot about these two AI giants. But before we go any further, we need to look at one key difference, their architecture. How does that affect what they can do in the real world? And can we see some examples of that?

Speaker 2: Absolutely. Understanding how they work is key to seeing what they're good at and where they struggle. Let's take a closer look. Okay, so we've got DeepSeek using that mixture of experts architecture and ChatGPT using a transformer architecture. What does that actually mean for what they can do?

Speaker 1: Yeah, mixture of experts, that kind of makes sense. But transformer, what's that all about?

Speaker 2: Well, the Transformer model is really good at processing language. It focuses on how the words in a sentence relate to each other. Think about it, when you read a sentence, each word kind of changes how you understand the other words right. That's what the Transformer model does. That's why it's so good at things like translating languages and summarizing text.

Speaker 1: So DeepSeek's MoE is like having a bunch of specialists, and ChatGPT's Transformer is like a language expert. How does that actually play out though? Like in the real world.

Speaker 2: This paper gives some good examples. One test had both models write some Python code to solve a problem. DeepSeek, using that MOE architecture, actually came up with a better solution. More efficient, and just cleaner code. Shows how good it is at logic and problem solving.

Speaker 1: Hmm, that's interesting. Especially if you're thinking about using these models for coding. Are there any other places where that MoE architecture gives DeepSeek a leg up?

Speaker 2: Yeah, they found another interesting thing. When they gave the models some tough math questions, DeepSeek consistently got the right answers, sometimes even better than ChatGPT. Seems like that MoE model, with all its little experts, might be better at stuff that needs lots of calculations and logical steps.

Speaker 1: So, if you need to work with code or solve some complex math problems, DeepSeek and its MoE architecture might be the way to go. But if you're more into translating languages or writing text, then maybe ChatGPT is better with its focus on language.

Speaker 2: Right. And don't forget about the cost. DeepSeek is completely free. That makes it a lot easier for people and small companies to use. It's a game changer.

Speaker 1: Totally. It's making these powerful tools available to everybody. So how are these other companies like OpenAI with their paid subscriptions reacting to this?

Speaker 2: Well, the competition is definitely heating up. Some companies are already changing their prices, offering more features for free. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out in the future.

Speaker 1: DeepSeek is really shaking things up. It's making everyone rethink pricing and who can access this stuff. That's great for users. More choices and lower cost. But it's also a lot to keep up with. How do people and companies make sense of it all?

Speaker 2: Keeping up with all this is definitely a challenge, but there are resources out there.

Speaker 1: It really is. There's so much happening so fast. So where should people go to learn more about this stuff?

Speaker 2: Well, staying up to date is key. Things like industry magazines, tech blogs, those can be a good place to start. They talk about the newest stuff, what's changing, and even compare different AI tools.

Speaker 1: Right. But what about the more practical side of things? Like, let's say there's a company that wants to use AI, but they don't know where to begin.

Speaker 2: Yeah, in that case, talking to an expert can be really helpful. There are companies that specialize in this stuff, like, uh, Genetech Solutions. They help businesses figure out what they need, what tools to use, even help them set it all up.

Speaker 1: So Genetech Solutions can give businesses the know how and the support they need to really get into AI. That's great. Well, we've covered a lot today, the tech behind DeepSeek and ChatGPT, how they were developed, the whole picture really. What's the one big thing you want our listeners to walk away with?

Speaker 2: I'd say the biggest takeaway is this. The AI world is changing fast, and it's exciting. We're seeing incredible progress. This stuff has the potential to change everything from how we work to how we live. The important thing is to stay informed, ask questions, and approach this technology with a good mix of excitement and caution.

Speaker 1: I like that. Be excited about the possibilities but keep your eyes open. Well, thank you for being here today and sharing your expertise with us. It's been a really interesting conversation.

Speaker 2: The pleasure was all mine. Always a good time talking about AI.

Speaker 1: And to everyone listening, thanks for joining us for another Deep Dive. We hope you found this look at DeepSeek and ChatGPT informative and got you thinking.
